CVIOS Orchid and Garden Market (April 13, 2019)

After a busy few months participating in local orchid shows, the CVIOS held one of the final events of the 2018/2019 year, with their local “Orchid and Garden Market”.

Suzanne’s beautiful home in Nanaimo provided a wonderful backdrop for the society’s colourful orchid plant display, silent auction, and sales table. Various members were on hand to answer visitor’s questions and provide information about how to grow orchids successfully in this region. Many guests attended the event, despite the cool temperatures, and enjoyed chatting with volunteers and browsing the various tables.

I was particularly impressed with the variety and quality of plants displayed by this small but talented (and patient) group of orchid enthusiasts! CVIOS president, Dora, brought her beautiful blooming cattleyas , one of which was displayed at the VicOS show which was held 6 weeks ago - an lovely plant indeed.

Please stay tuned as there are still a few meetings left in the 2018/2019 year. Guests are always welcome if you would like to attend to learn more about the CVIOS.

2019 Vancouver Orchid Society Show and Sale (March 23 - 24th, 2019)

After last year’s difficulties of cancelled ferries, the set up for the Vancouver Show this year went relatively smoothly.  Suzanne and I each loaded our vehicle with 15 plants and then filled in every nook and cranny with staging, cloth, driftwood, moss, branches, lichen and anything else that we might need.  Darlene met us on the ferry and helped with the paperwork so that set up would be quick on arrival at Van Dusen.

For those that have been to the Vancouver show before, the floorplan was changed this year and it allowed for better viewing around the show tables and more room for the vendor tables. Our two-table set up was against a wall which was somewhat different than we have had before, but it worked out well and allowed for a good display without crowding the plants.  I am proud to say our table was voted the best visiting society display.

Plants on the table were from Alexey, Dora, Laurie, Mike, Robert, Sheila, Suzanne and myself.  Thank you to all.  Our plants did very well, overall 9 ribbons, Mike a third, Laurie a second, Sheila a first, Dora two firsts and a second and Alexey two firsts and a second as well as an AOS award of Certificate of Cultural Merit with 87 points for his Pleione formosana “Meetings at CVIOS”.  Fantastic!

The show was incredibly busy with visitors, and Saturday morning the 7 vendor tables resembled a wild feeding frenzy.  Note for next year… pre order if you can as plants sold quickly, particularly the miniatures.  Quite a few of our members managed to come over for the show and all in all it was an excellent weekend.

A note from our AOS chair Darlene Rathwell:

For me, as a newbie, the show was wonderful. I leaned so much from members about organization and setup and from the exhibits and exhibitors.

I heard numerous comments about how enchanting the orchids were, how fabulous the displays were and how much visitors liked the show tables and diversity of orchids. It was fun talking to the visitors – there seems to be lots of orchid enthusiasts out there of all degrees.

Thank you to all the contributors and members who helped make our show a success. Thank you, Alexey, for the two wonderful orchids – they were the stars of the silent auction. Also, thank you Laurie and friends for the lovely orchid pots and books. Thank you, Paramount Orchids for the book and plant which also garnered a lot of attention on the auction table.

A big shout out to our 2019 show committee, Darlene, Laurie, Sheila, Valerie and Suzanne. Without the hard work from these members the CVIOS show could not happen.
